University of Calgary Fine Arts professor Dr. James (Jim) Parker connects Computer Sciences with Fine Arts and brings the components of theatre to video gaming with his creation of Booze Cruise, "a driving game with a serious drinking problem." The idea behind the product is simple: To create an innovative video game with a message that could be as playable at as many locations as possible. The project comes as a result of a course Parker teaches on serious games; that is, games created for more than entertainment purposes.

Capital Health & the University of Alberta Break Ground on the Edmonton Clinic: New approach to health delivery and education
The official groundbreaking for the Edmonton Clinic today marks the next step on a journey in patient care, education, and research for Albertans. A partnership between the University of Alberta, Capital Health and the provincial government; the Edmonton Clinic will be a national leader in innovative complex outpatient care, teaching and technology, with a focus on customer service. When open, the Edmonton Clinic will increase outpatient clinic capacity by 50 per cent and will allow 140 beds to be added to the University of Alberta Hospital and Stollery Children's Hospital, will teach an additional 800 health sciences students each year, and will allow rural Albertans to stay in their communities while keeping them connected, via new technologies, to the latest advances in diagnosis and treatment.

Malaspina University-College Takes on Students from Suspended Capilano Program
Six students from Capilano College's McRae Institute of International Management will be attending Malaspina this year. Low enrolment in Capilano College's McRae Institute of International Management Graduate Program has resulted in the suspension of courses for first year students. McRae has worked with the program candidates to find places for them to study at the graduate level, with six of them electing to attend Malaspina.

Four University of Alberta professors are recipients of a Canada Research Chair totalling $2.9 million. The announcement was made today by Secretary of State Diane Ablonczy on behalf of Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs Program. Biological Sciences professor and Executive Director of the Canadian International Polar Year Secretariat, David Hik, was renewed as the Canada Research Chair in Northern Ecology.

University of British Columbia Prof Invents a Cleaner, Greener and More Profitable Process for Refining Copper
UBC researcher David Dixon has invented an environmentally friendly and cheaper way to produce high quality copper from low-grade concentrates, thus expanding potential copper reserves. UBC has granted Bateman Engineering exclusive rights to market the new technology in 20 copper-producing countries. A number of international mining companies have requested detailed feasibility studies in anticipation of building full-scale Galvanox plants, and licensing negotiations are underway. Dixon's co-inventor is UBC PhD recipient Alain Tshilombo.

University of Regina: Canada's new government supports ARTSask.ca
On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Philanthropist backs creation of new diabetes research chair at the University of Alberta
The University of Alberta and the Alberta Diabetes Foundation are pleased to announce a $1.5 million donation from Edmonton born philanthropist Peter Allard. This generous contribution will enable the University of Alberta to create the Dr. Charles A. Allard Chair in Diabetes Research, a position named in honor of the donor's late father and renowned Edmonton surgeon. The chair will be held by the new scientific director of the Alberta Diabetes Institute (ADI), Dr. Ronald Gill, a recent recruit from the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diseases at the University of Colorado.
