Admissions Criteria & Procedures |
|
|
| |
Juris Doctor Admission:
As a prerequisite to enrollment, applicants are required to have earned a baccalaureate degree from a college or university that is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Department of Education. A final, official transcript evidencing the conferral of the degree must be submitted before enrollment.
While no particular major will ensure success in law school, a solid foundation in the liberal arts and/or sciences with substantive writing assignments is recommended. The College of Law will review each applicant's transcript to determine whether the applicant has taken a mix of classes that demonstrate his or her ability to read and comprehend rapidly and accurately, to think precisely and logically, and to communicate clearly and correctly.
International Law LLM Admission:
Applicants for admission to the LL.M. Program must have received their first law degree at an ABA-accredited law school or at a law school approved by the appropriate authority in a country other than the United States. In addition, the Graduate and International Programs Committee may in its discretion, admit applicants with law or law related degrees, practicing lawyers and applicants which the Committee determines to have comparable credentials.
Elder Law LLM Admission:
Applicants for admission to the LL.M. program in Elder Law must hold a J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, or must hold a first law degree from a foreign law school approved by the appropriate authority in that country. Applicants who received their first law degree from a U.S. law school that is not, or at the time of the applicant's graduation was not, accredited by the American Bar Association may be considered for admission if the applicant (1) is licensed to practice law in at least one state within the U.S., (2) can provide a certificate of good standing from that state's bar, and (3) has significant experience in Elder Law or related areas of practice.
MJ in Law and Aging Admission:
Individuals who apply for admission to the Master of Jurisprudence in Law and Aging program must hold at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; have substantial experience in a field of aging (demonstrated by work experience or education); and have a satisfactory score on the GRE or an equivalent test (this requirement may be waived in appropriate circumstances). Stetson College of Law prefers that applicants take the GRE but, in certain circumstances, they may accept scores from other standardized tests. Prior permission from the director of the program is required before submitting results from another test. Official scores should be forwarded from ETS to the director of the Center for Excellence in Elder Law.
Foreign Applicants:
Foreign applicants must submit the legal credentials that apply in their respective countries of origin. All applicants must demonstrate strong academic achievement and must be proficient in the English language. Applicants whose native language is not English must achieve a TOEFL examination score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based).
