          Institute Overview   Grad Profiles

California Institute of Integral Studies California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is a pioneer in higher education offering interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and applied studies in its three schools: The School of Consciousness and Transformation, the School of Professional Psychology, and the School of Undergraduate Studies. Master's and doctoral degrees are available, as well as a Bachelor of Arts completion degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. CIIS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

The integral outlook, envisioned by the founders of CIIS, has grown to include the study of multiple perspectives and spiritual traditions, and encompasses the myriad aspects of learning: the intellectual, the experiential, and the applied. More and more, students are looking to cultivate qualities they will need as leaders of transformative change in their fields of work and in society - and to do so, they are looking for an education that, in the words of educational activist Parker Palmer, "links the inner and outer; that rejoins soul and role, that understands that the world we live in is constantly being co-created by the interplay of what is within us and what is around us." (CIIS Commencement, May 2007).

Since its inception in 1968, CIIS has been at the center of the San Francisco Bay Area discussion on spirituality and the integration of Eastern and Western philosophies. The Institute is committed to small classes, a personal learning environment, and a strong sense of community, making it an extraordinary place for people committed to transforming themselves and the world.

The CIIS School of Consciousness and Transformation is inspired by the integral approach to education, which predicates a spiritual foundation to life, knowledge, and culture, and encompasses a rich diversity of approaches and viewpoints. The internationally known core faculty is augmented by a remarkable group of distinguished visiting and adjunct faculty. Programs in the school include Asian and Comparative Studies; East-West Psychology; Integrative Health Studies; Philosophy, Consciousness, and Cosmology; Social and Cultural Anthropology; Transformative Leadership and Transformative Studies; and Women's Spirituality. The Institute recently launched two MFA programs; Creative Inquiry, Interdisciplinary Arts, and Writing and Consciousness. Both programs explore the intersection between artist and society, craft and aesthetics, history and contemporary arts and literature, bringing together the artist or writer and the greater world. CIIS also offers an advanced certificate in Spiritual Counseling, geared to mental health professionals and pastoral counselors, through its East-West Psychology program.

The CIIS School of Professional Psychology balances traditional clinical training with a concern for contemporary social, cultural, and spiritual issues, encouraging integration of new and alternative approaches to psychological health while adhering to rigorous standards of scholarship, research, and practice. The school's five master's level concentrations (Community Mental Health, Drama Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Integral Counseling Psychology, and Somatic Psychology) meet the academic requirements for Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) licensure in the state of California. CIIS's doctoral program in Clinical Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The School of Undergraduate Studies' Bachelor of Arts Degree Completion Program in Interdisciplinary Studies brings adult students together in a cohort, utilizing transformative learning principles while focusing on the themes of self, culture, and society.

CIIS operates from three buildings in San Francisco's thriving South of Market neighborhood, all within walking distance of the cultural centers of the city. From the famous icon of the Golden Gate Bridge to the art galleries, restaurants, parks, and breathtaking views, the city takes pride in its unrivaled attractions, renowned museums, natural beauty by the Bay, rich multiculturalism, and its unique neighborhoods.

Among the Institute's facilities is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library, containing approximately 35,000 books, 200 print and 1,800 online journals, 600 audiotapes, and a growing video collection, including a special psychotherapy video collection. The Library offers a universe of online information including thousands of online books, journals, dissertations, and disciplinary databases. Most of the Library's key resources are accessible via the Web. The Library is particularly strong in the fields of counseling and psychology, philosophy and religion, East-West comparative studies, social and cultural anthropology, various facets of an integral worldview, and the perennial wisdom.

CIIS provides students with two computer labs containing a total of 20 computers. The Institute's School of Professional Psychology runs five award-winning counseling centers in San Francisco that serve as professional training facilities for students and provide community service.           Financial Aid & Assistantships   Grad Profiles

Financial assistance comes from many sources and in a variety of forms.
• Institute Scholarships: Each year the Institute offers a limited number of scholarships to outstanding continuing graduate students.
• Graduate Scholarships: These awards are for tuition credit only; special consideration is given to applicants from under-represented ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Federal Stafford Loans are low-interest loans made to eligible students with demonstrated financial need. The interest for the Subsidized Stafford Loan is paid by the federal government while the student is enrolled on an at least half time basis and for 6 months thereafter (known as the grace period). The final amount borrowed must be paid back in full within ten years.

Students who do not qualify for the federal subsidized loan, or who need to borrow more than the annual Subsidized limit, may borrow under the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program up to the maximum annual limit, minus their eligibility for the Subsidized Loan.
          Student Affairs   Grad Profiles

The Student Alliance promotes the involvement of students on all levels of the Institute community to support students' needs. The Alliance is a forum for students of various programs to explore solutions to common problems and is a body that strives to enhance the quality of life for CIIS students, and to ensure that the student voice is heard at the Institute.

Social Activities (Clubs & Organizations)   Grad Profiles

Students form activity groups from year to year wherever there is interest. Several groups are ongoing:
-The People of Color Group is open to faculty, staff, and students of color. The group meets weekly to discuss issues of diversity at the Institute and to provide ongoing support to the community of color at CIIS. A major goal of the group is to promote cultural diversity and awareness in the CIIS community.
-Queer@CIIS: Discussion forum and support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning members of the CIIS community.
- Meditation Group
- MULTIPeopLES: support group for those who identify as multiracial.
- White People Working Against Racism: open to students, faculty, and staff who want to participate in a process towards unlearning racism.
