University of Alberta: Augustana Professor named Woman of the Year
On April 16, 2007, Yvonne Becker will receive the University of Alberta's Academic Women's Association Woman of the Year Award in recognition for her impressive and sustained contributions. Her passion, commitment, and energy have helped shape Augustana for the past 20 years. As a tireless advocate for female students and faculty, Becker's advocacy in these causes can be traced over the years. She was instrumental in Women's Studies becoming a core category in Augustana's curriculum, as well as in developing a Women's Studies concentration and minor. She is also a founding member of the Augustana Campus Women's Caucus and the student-led women's issues group. In his letter of support for her nomination, Augustana Campus Dean, Roger Epp praised Becker: "She has been a pioneer for two decades in shaping both a culture that is hospitable to women - students and academic staff - and a curriculum that has encouraged students to think about gender." With a significant personal history as an athlete, Becker has also worked hard to promote the Athletics program at Augustana. Since 1986, she has been the Athletics Director, as well as the Chair of Physical Education at Augustana. She has been an inspiring leader in both roles. Student athletes are guided first to excel at academics and secondly in athletics. The success of the Athletics program and its teams is due, in no small part, to Becker's commitment and vision. "One of Professor Becker's significant achievements is her work with the Canadian Colleges Athletics Association to establish a program to mentor young women as coaches. She has been an important mentor to her own student athletes, some of whom have found university coaching or professorial positions elsewhere in Canada," said Epp. The University of Alberta's Academic Women's Association's Woman of the Year Award recognizes women for their contributions to the betterment of women in the University community, either through the course of their career or through their dedication to current activism.

University of British Columbia: Sauder MBA hockey team wins Harvard Business School's McArthur Cup in Boston
The Sauder School of Business MBA hockey team has won the 2007 McArthur Cup (Division B), hosted by the Harvard Business School in Boston. The tournament, which took place from April 6 to 8, included university MBA ice hockey teams from Yale, Tuck (Dartmouth), Harvard, Queen's and Babson. It is named after John H. McArthur, Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration Dean from 1980 through 1995, and a Bachelor of Commerce degree holder from the University of British Columbia. McArthur, from Vancouver, is a renowned supporter of the game, and in 1996 was selected as Honorary Coach of the hockey team at Harvard College and as a member of the Varsity Club. "It was an honour to be invited to this tournament, and a thrill to win the top prize," said Steve Champion, President of the Sauder MBA Society at the University of British Columbia. "The Sauder UBC victory is a testament to Canada's passion for hockey at all levels, and underscores the excellence across the board at the Sauder School of Business." The victory for Sauder also coincides with the accelerating hockey focus at the University of British Columbia, which will play host to men's and women's ice hockey at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Construction of the university's Olympics venue, the UBC Winter Sports Centre, will be completed by summer 2008.
